Did Konami Abandon Metal Gear After Kojima Left?

Metal Gear Solid V grossed $179 million on day one.

The next one, Metal Gear Survive, was the first developed after creator Hideo Kojima left Konami. It sold a fraction as much. So Konami didn't stop outright. It shipped a new game, and far fewer of you bought it.

Meanwhile, the series has sold 66.4 million units as of June 2026, according to Wikipedia.

The honest answer: Here's the part most retellings skip: Wikipedia never gives Konami's reason, so we won't invent one. Sure, one weak spinoff proves nothing alone. But a creator exit followed by a sales drop is a pattern you'd notice too.
