PULSE GAMINGWhy Valve's Steam Machine Costs $1,049
Why does Valve's Steam Machine cost $1,049 today?
Steam lists it at $1,049 today, and £879 in the UK. Unlike the 2015 Steam Machines, Valve builds this one itself, with no partner brands.
Those first ones flopped and died in 2018, and Valve's engineers blamed a lack of games.
The verdict: Granted, consoles often launch cheap and earn it back on games. But this is a full PC Valve builds itself, and the sources show no sign of a subsidy. We think you're paying PC prices, not console prices.
